There’s nothing left here
You ripped me to pieces
Please, let me be free
I thought we would last but,
There are no more excuses now
There’s nothing left in me
It’s time for me to flee
I’ve been hurt for so long
Please! Let me be free
You broke me willingly
It’s time to heal these bruises
There’s nothing else left here
I still want you badly
But I have too many scars
Please, let me be free
I warned you and try calling you to reason
Now there won’t be any more of those kisses
There’s nothing left in me
Please, let me be free.
This was my first attempt of a villanelle. I referred back to a YouTube video made by Josie Alford for help. I started by writing the couplets that repeat through the poem and gone to find words that I would be able to rhyme with later. I am proud of the finished work but wished I could have been able to make ten-syllable lines and add a better rhythm to the poem.
This piece of work was submitted on October 23rd 2020 by Lara Soares for the module 'Poetry for Digital Times' as part of my degree English and Creative Writing BA.
